Getting Started
What is Pen to Print?
Pen to Print is the leading AI-powered handwriting to text platform, trusted by 3.5M+ users since 2018. It uses advanced handwriting OCR to digitize handwritten documents and allow legible reading of cursive and messy handwriting. It offers a wide toolkit for notes, math, tables, searchable PDFs, and data extraction — across web, mobile, desktop, email, and API.
Which tool should I use?
Pen to Print offers dedicated tools for different kinds of handwritten documents. Pick the one that matches your input:
- Handwriting OCR — Convert handwriting to Word or text. Digitize simple and complex layouts while preserving hierarchy and formatting, extracting inline images, tables, and math equations.
- Math Converter — Convert handwritten math equations into Word or LaTeX.
- Tables Digitizer — Transform structured handwritten tables into Excel spreadsheets.
- Searchable PDF — Make scanned handwritten documents searchable while keeping the original scan.
- Data Extraction — Extract handwritten data fields into a master digital spreadsheet using a predefined template.
How accurate is the handwriting recognition?
Pen to Print delivers 98.2% word accuracy on standard handwriting. Thanks to its AI-powered handwriting OCR engine, it recognizes any kind of handwriting, even cursive, messy or hard-to-read writing — and is capable of handling complex layouts.
What handwriting and languages does it read?
Pen to Print reads cursive, print, mixed-case, and messy handwriting across all Latin-script languages — including English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Portuguese. Old script and historical handwriting are supported too.
For details on cursive specifically, see our Cursive Reader.
Where can I use Pen to Print?
Pen to Print runs on five platforms so you can choose the right workflow for you, and convert handwriting wherever you work:
- Web — no install, works in any browser.
- Mobile — iOS and Android apps for camera-to-text on the go.
- Desktop app — for offline workflows and large-volume processing.
- Email — send a scan, get text back, no software required.
- API — integrate handwriting OCR into your own systems.
Toolkit & Features
How to convert handwritten notes to text?
Use Pen to Print's Handwriting OCR — it turns any scanned handwritten image or PDF into editable text or a fully formatted Word document. Drop in a scan and the AI engine reads the handwriting (cursive, print, mixed, even messy) and outputs digital text you can review, edit, and export.
The tool runs in two modes — Basic for plain-text transcription, and Advanced for documents where layout matters: it preserves hierarchy, formatting, inline images, hand-drawn tables, and math equations inside a structured Word file.
For a step-by-step walkthrough, see our guide to converting handwritten notes to text.
What's the difference between Basic and Advanced mode?
Basic mode converts handwriting to plain text or a clean Word document — ideal for notes, letters, journals, and long-form manuscripts. Advanced mode preserves the original layout, rebuilding hierarchy, formatting, inline images, hand-drawn tables, and math equations inside a structured Word file.
The two modes also run on different OCR engines, so if Basic's accuracy doesn't match your expectations, try Advanced — it often handles challenges better.
Basic is included in the Starter plan and above; Advanced is included in the All-inclusive plan and above. See pricing for the full breakdown.
How to convert handwritten math equations to digital format?
Pen to Print offers two tools for handwritten math — pick by what's on your page. Use the Handwriting OCR's Advanced mode when math is embedded in a longer block of text (notes with equations mixed in) — it digitizes the whole page into Word with the equations rendered inline. Use the Math Converter when your page is mainly equations and formulas — it converts handwritten math to Word and LaTeX, ideal for assignments, papers, and lecture notes.
How to digitize handwritten tables?
Pen to Print offers two tools for handwritten tables — pick by what's on your page. Use the Handwriting OCR's Advanced mode when a table is embedded in a longer block of text — it converts the whole page into Word and renders the table as a native Word table inside the surrounding text. Use the Tables Digitizer when your page is mainly tabular — it exports the data straight into Excel, ideal for full-page handwritten tables, ledgers, and structured data sheets.
How to store a scan as a searchable PDF?
Use the Searchable PDF tool to convert scanned handwritten documents into fully searchable PDF files. Pen to Print's AI-powered OCR engine recognizes the handwritten content and embeds an invisible text layer over your original scan — the result looks identical to the source but supports Ctrl+F search, text selection, copy, and highlighting. Ideal for archiving notebooks, journals, and historical records you want to keep visually intact while making them findable.
How to extract data from handwritten forms into Word or Excel?
Use Pen to Print's Data Extraction tool to pull specific fields from scanned handwritten forms and export them into Word or Excel. The flow has three steps:
- Create a template — upload a single completed copy of the form, pick which fields to extract, delete irrelevant ones, add missing ones, and reorder or rename them as needed.
- Process the forms — choose the template and upload up to 50 scanned forms in one batch. Each scan appears side-by-side with the extracted data so you can review the results and verify accuracy before exporting.
- Export the extracted data as a document (Word, txt) or a spreadsheet (CSV, Excel).

Plans & Billing
How can I cancel my subscription?
You can easily cancel your subscription at any time through your Account Settings or by contacting our customer support.
Once you cancel your subscription, it will not automatically renew at the end of the billing period. Your credits and premium features will be available for you until the end of the billing period.
My needs have changed, can I upgrade or downgrade my plan?
A monthly subscription can easily be upgraded or downgraded to another plan (Monthly or Yearly). An upgrade is immediate and its credits and features will be added immediately to your account. The next billing will be according to the new plan, in cost and date.
The original plan will be canceled, and its credits will expire.
A downgrade takes place at the end of the billing cycle, so your next billing is according to the new plan.
For upgrading or downgrading a yearly subscription please contact our support at contact@pen-to-print.com
Do unused pages roll over to the next month?
No. Page credits reset at the start of each month and don't carry over — every plan (monthly or yearly) renews your full page allowance each month. If you regularly run out, upgrading is instant; if you usually leave pages unused, downgrading is just as easy.
How does the credit system work?
Each credit represents one converted page. You only use credits when you download a converted file for the first time.
You can download the same file again, in the same session, in different formats (Word, PDF, Excel, etc.) - free of charge.
If you convert a file but don't download it, no credit is deducted.
Can I share my plan with a team?
Yes — the Business plan supports team access. The account owner invites teammates by email; they share the same credit pool and can work from their own devices, all under one subscription. The owner adds or removes teammates and monitors usage at any time. Starter and All-inclusive plans are single-user; for larger or custom team setups, see Enterprise.
Is there a free version or trial available?
Yes! You can try Pen to Print with 10 free pages to explore how it works and evaluate the accuracy of our handwriting OCR before upgrading.
We offer a variety of cost-effective plans for individuals, teams, and high-volume users - so you can choose what fits your needs best.
I've changed my mind - can I get a refund?
In general, subscription fees are non-refundable, except where required by law.
However, we understand that circumstances may vary. Refund requests made within 30 days of purchase may be considered on a case-by-case basis - as long as the service has not been used during that period.
All refund decisions are made at the sole discretion of the company.
